Obama is a Sneakerhead!  Last month we saw President Obama get a special pair of Nike Air Spizike’s presented to him by Spike Jones and this month, US Representative Michael Michaud of Maine asked Kids Air Jordan 12 New Balance’s Norridgewock plant to customize a pair of New Balance 990 for President Barack Obama

Embellished with “President Obama” around the heel and “Handmade in the United States” on the heel tab, Rep. Michaud will make the case that military footwears and training gears should be “Made in the USA”. In a brief statement, the the Congressman wrote:

The workers in Norridgewock produced a pair of high-quality sneakers, and I’m looking forward to delivering this Kids Air Jordan 13 Maine-made product to the President tonight. I’m hopeful he’ll order the DOD to buy sneakers made in the USA for our service members’ physical training uniforms. They’ll get great sneakers, and we’ll be better positioned to create more Maine jobs.

Obama has some presidential sneakers

When President Obama Nike Air Max 87 hit the gym to play basketball last weekend, he was photographed with a pair of red sneakers under his arm. What kind of kicks was Obama carrying?

Pretty appropriate ones Nike Air Max 89, as it turns out: the Under Armour “USA President PE” sneakers.

Ryan Drew, director of footwear at Under Armour, recently told GlobalGrind how the shoe inspired by Obama came about.

Milwaukee Bucks player Brandon Jennings (who has worked for Under Armour) was in the office when the idea for the sneaker was born, Drew said.

“We just thought, ‘If Obama had a shoe what would be on it?’ Well, the presidential seal’s gotta be on it. Most player edition shoes have their number on it. Well what’s his number? 44. What’s the sock liner graphic look like? Those were all the things that went into it,” he explained.

This photo shows Jennings with a close-up of the sneaker, which features a presidential seal on the tongue.

Drew said they ordered “a bunch” of the shoes, though “there was never a plan to sell it” or a “plan to even get them on him [the president].”

But at some point, someone slipped a pair to Obama Nike Air Max 90, who showed off the sneakers in public last Saturday. Said Drew, “It’s cool when it ends up on the guy who inspired it.”

Spike Lee hooks Barack Obama up with a custom Jordan package

Posted on April 20th, 2012

Apparently the new thing in basketball shoe marketing is giving Barack Obama a pair of shoes. First it was Under Armour and Brandon Jennings hooking Mr. President up with some of unreleased shoes. Now it’s Knicks Kids Air Jordan 8 fan/movie director/gigantic jersey enthusiast Spike Lee giving Obamdawg some special Jordan Spizikes.

Here’s Spike:

These Are The Spizikes Made By Michael Jordan For Michelle&Barack W/ Wood Engrained Presidental Seal [...] President Obama Is A Huge Bulls And Jordan Fan.Here He Holds His Gift Of Spizikes From MJ Himself.

To be fair, these aren’t exactly 1-of-1, specially designed by Michael Jordan shoes we’re Kids Air Jordan 9 talking about. They’re actually the “Bordeaux” colorway that comes out this February, but now they have a fancypants wood box engraved with the presidential seal and Michael Jordan’s autograph (photo after the jump) which has to be exclusive to the president, as directed by MJ himself. Or at least that’s what Spike Lee is leading me to believe and I totally trust him.

That being said, still pretty awesome. It’s not every day the best basketball player ever sends an Oscar-nominated director to deliver personal gift to the most powerful man on Earth. I’m not sure that these shoes and their box will go next to Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize, but you have to agree this is cool.

Not to mention, since this is shoe is going to be released to the public, you can have the same shoes as the President of the United States of America. Imagine the laughs you can get from telling your friends that you’re wearing Obama Jordans. That Kids Air Jordan 11 alone might be worth the sticker price.

But be warned — I’m guessing Michael Jordan’s not going to send one of his famous buddies to hand deliver your pair. Can’t win ‘em all.

Ryan Drew Spills The Beans On Obama Under Armour Sneaker (DETAILS)

Posted on April 19th, 2012

GlobalGrind chopped it up with Ryan Drew, Director of Footwear at Under Armour after images of President  Air Max 24 7 Obama rocking a pair of Under Armour “USA President PE”  kicks hit the net several hours ago! UA Ambassador of Cool Brandon Jennings  also appeared in another image with the shoes, the Presential Seal prominent in the picture.

We grilled Drew about the shoe; here’s what he told us.

GlobalGrind: We got a glimpse of the Obama sneaker. How psyched were you when you saw him with them?

Ryan Drew: It was great! When something like that shows Nike Air Max LTD 2 up, your email starts blowing up over the weekend and people start floating images around. It’s great,  fantastic, underground marketing for us, and it’s appropriate because he’s a ball player.

How long does a  project like this usually take?

Well, we always sit around the office and are constantly looking for themes to build product around. Most of the time we’re just looking for Nike Air Max LTD 4 excuses to come up with new color-ways so we can just make stuff for ourselves.  I think Brandon was in the office and I think I  ran into a guy who was connected with President Obama at the Peakness. He was talking about how he was a player. We were going back and forth about Obama’s game, saying things like, Oh I can take him!’ And “he’s got a nice left hand, you know he don’t dish the ball.’  So, I was talking to designers and  I said if we were going to build him a shoe, what would it look like? That always starts the conversation. Then its onto what’s the color, what the shoe; you know he likes mid cuts, he’s not a low top guy.

You start think about colors, what color is it going to be? Is it a navy blue? Is it a royal blue? What are the themes that you’re to put on them? I mean the graphics are great because with his presence,  he’s done such a great job of branding himself! So Nike Air Max Wavy, you’ve got all these logos that are public domain. We start pulling all that stuff and just really having fun with it. When we order shoes for Brandon, Brandon is an 11 ½ but we order test sizes in 12. We ordered these shoes and we brought a bunch of them in for all the guys in the basketball category because we all wear a size 12 and that’s basically how it started.

Michelle Obama Sneakers? Pop-Up Shop Is Kickin’ It Old-School

Posted on April 18th, 2012

Want to sport Michelle Obama sneakers while Nike Zoom Lebron 4.5 sipping Barack-branded coffee? Here’s the place to go: Hip-Hop U.S.A, a Harlem-based company that puts on sneaker-art competitions, has opened a pop-up shop at 343 Lafayette Street, between Bleecker and Bond Streets. The Local stopped into the store’s opening to check out sneakers painted by graffiti artists in the style of their train murals from the 1970s and 80s. Seems subway artists are making a Jordan Infant Shoes Package comeback.

Nike “TTK Streak” Dunk High Custom Pack

Posted on April 17th, 2012

TTK, the person who brought us the “Obama” Dunk High, is just shy of a four pack of TMNT Dunks with his latest set of custom sneakers. TTK applied his ever popular abstract concept of blotched streaks, dotted specks, and contrasting light/dark colors, but this time in a slightly different direction then his past designs The pack includes each turtle represented by their usual colors on the Nike swoosh and laces: Red (Raphael), Orange (Michelangelo), Purple (Donatello), but no Blue for poor Leonardo. But don’t feel too bad about the missing Leonardo version because TTK plans to complete the set once he finds the time. See detailed pictures of the custom sneakers and the original intro to the TMNT cartoon show after the jump.

Nike [Barack Obama] Custom Dunk

TTK is back once again with another great pair of custom sneakers, the Nike Obama Custom Dunks. This time he gained inspiration from the heated presidential race, making these artistic Obama Dunks. TTK received a lot of requests to make some customs with this concept, so he finally sat down and began working on these beauties for the recent Funk Master Flex Sneaker Battle. When he attended the Sneaker Battle this past week he didn’t take home any prize money but he was overwhelmed with praise for his design. The shoes feature patent leather with a blue colorway, two portrait pictures of Obama on the heels, black abstract designs thought out the sneaker, and Obama’s logo. Checkout the creation of the custom sneakers from beginning to end after the jump.

Posted on April 8th, 2012

Obama mania has caused TTK to spring into action and create this “Barack Obama” Blazer High custom sneaker as a result of the overwhelming number of Obama sneakers that enjoyed his first design, the Nike Obama Dunk. The sneaker showcases a clean black base with blue accents along the sides, a white midsole, and a blue tongue. But, the center piece of the custom are the wonder self portraits of Barack Obama drawn on the side panels with the words “Obama ’08″ one on shoe and “Change” on the other. There’s also white and blue bubble details surrounding the portraits, golden TTK lacelocks, and a pair of fat black laces.  See detailed pictures after the jump.
